Job summary We are looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer with strong expertise in hardware and switchboard engineering for marine retrofit and upgrade projects. You will lead the design, development, and integration of electrical systems and switchboards within vessel modernization and decarbonization programs. This role combines detailed engineering with hands-on understanding of shipboard systems — from concept design to commissioning — ensuring class compliance, safety, and operational excellence. Key Responsibilities: Engineering & Design
Lead the design and specification of marine electrical systems, focusing on switchboards, MCCs, power distribution panels, protection systems, and control hardware.
Analyze technical requirements and assess risks and opportunities for products and processes.
Develop basic and detailed engineering packages, including drawings, calculations,
Develop and review single line diagrams, load balance calculations, cable sizing, and schematic drawings.
Define technical specifications for switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, busbars, and protective relays.
Prepare and validate technical purchasing specifications, datasheets, and material take-offs (MTOs).
Integration
Collaborate with OEMs for switchboard design, FAT, and type approval testing.
Define and implement hardware architectures integrating switchboards with PLC/automation systems, protection relays, and monitoring interfaces.
Participate in system configuration, FAT/SAT, and commissioning activities onboard.
Manage interface documentation between electrical hardware, control systems, and other disciplines.
Project Delivery & Coordination
Coordinate with project teams, procurement, and site teams to ensure compliant and on-time delivery of retrofit packages.
Provide technical support during installation and commissioning phases, ensuring proper integration with existing vessel systems.
Conduct technical reviews, risk assessments, and HSE evaluations related to electrical modifications.
Prepare and maintain project reports, progress updates, and as-built documentation for certification.
Continuous Improvement & Mentoring
Identify opportunities to standardize hardware and switchboard solutions, improve documentation quality, and enhance efficiency.
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to internal training on electrical retrofit engineering best practices.
High Voltage Systems & Shore Connection Expertise (Desirable)
Knowledge of marine and offshore high-voltage systems (3.3 kV–11 kV), including switchboards, transformers, and protection schemes.
Experience in high-voltage distribution studies, such as load flow, short-circuit, and protection coordination using ETAP or equivalent software.
Familiarity with cold ironing (shore connection) systems and international standards, particularly:
IEC/ISO/IEEE 80005-1 – High-voltage shore connection systems (HVSC) IEC/ISO/IEEE 80005-2 – Low-voltage shore connection systems (LVSC) IEC/ISO/IEEE 80005-3 – Data communication for shore connection systems
Understanding of shore power integration with vessel switchboards, including protection, interlock, and safety requirements.
Awareness of harmonic distortion control, earthing schemes, and load transfer between shore and ship.
Experience with hybridization projects involving shore power, energy storage, and onboard generation is a strong advantage.
Ability to interface with OEMs and class societies for high-voltage system design, FAT, and class approval.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Automation, or a related field.
Minimum 10 yrs experience in engineering, preferably with a shipbuilding background
Advanced expertise in one technical discipline (such as hardware engineering) and a solid understanding of related disciplines (such as instrumentation, automation, software).
Solid experience in designing, developing and integrating hardware and software systems
Capable of supporting pre – commissioning and commissioning of electrical systems performed by on site teams
Strong coordination and collaboration skills in multidisciplinary teams.
Proficiency in using technical design software (e.g., AutoCAD and AutoCad Electrical, EPlan)
Proficient in producing high quality technical documentation for certification, auditing, FAT and testing activities, such as Inspection and Testing Plans, Functional Description, FAT plans
Excellent analytical, decision-making, and technical documentation management skills.
Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
